In a world where people tend to think that the more intense an exercise can be is better for your results, there are more and more people getting injured than ever before. People are more intrigued with how much or how extreme some events are rather than just taking the time to learn technique first and take things step by step. If you choose exercises for yourself and others that stay below the injury prone risk line than chances of being hurt are going to be low. You can choose many exercises that have the same, if not more muscle activation and without all the risk of getting injured. The hard part is pushing people just right based off their physical capability at that exact moment when they start training. Powerhouse Fitness believes in providing you with extremely experienced, energetic, knowledgeable instructors. We believe that you will see results sooner and prevent injury by maintaining efficient, safe technique. We believe that if you are having fun and engaging your mind as well as your body, you will be more consistent with your exercise plan and you will get fitter sooner. And…we believe there are no better exercises than the low-impact, calorie-burning, workouts of Indoor Rowing and Bootcamp Classes! Read more
According to a recent study adults who sit for 10 plus hours a day have more than a 40% increased rate of dying sooner than those who sit less than 3 hours a day! ‘Bodies at rest…stay at rest. Bodies in motion.. stay in motion.’ Exercise and phsical activity has tremendous positive effects however, exercise alone does not necessarily protect you from the negative effects of prolonged inactivity and/or sitting around all day. The health benefits aerobic exercise include lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes, and helping get a better night’s sleep.
*A primary key to avoid a sedentary lifestyle is to stay fit as as long as possible throughout your life. If kids start sports at a young age, they become accustomed to regular practices and competition and less likely to play video games and watch t.v. all day. An active lifestyle becomes a physically active routine that can carry on to adult life. The longer an individual is involved in organized athletics the easier it is to keep going after high school and college. There are many sports options. Pick ones that are fun and participate regularly.

Have you ever caught yourself saying or thinking that you hate exercise. Or that it hurts too much and makes you sore. Not to mention that exercise makes you feel uncomfortable while you sweat. Having worked in the fitness industry for more than 10 years with Spectrum, 24 Hour Fitness, Gold’s Gym, Equinox, and LMU’s Burns Recreation And Fitness Center I’ve learned why so many people make these statements and why they tend to struggle more with being consistent in their training routines. The reality is that exercise does hurt and it is difficult. The other day I came across someone at Powerhouse Fitness wearing a T-shirt that said “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.”- Lance Armstrong. I have to agree with Lance in his statement because there have been many moments in my life during workouts and competition where I have wanted to quit because it’s just too hard and it hurts too bad. Yet, I realized that my body would actually give in to the pain a couple minutes into a race and or workout as if your body said ‘Ok… I give up. I tried to make you stop but I guess I’m going to have to get up and train today.’ I always mention to all my members that just simply getting out of bed and to the class is the hardest thing to do. After the first 10 minutes of every workout I really feel as if my body is ready to go, awake, and a fat-burning machine. Almost 100% of the time after teaching my classes at Powerhouse Fitness an intoxicating feeling of euphoria and happiness comes over me and I’ve noticed that working out even less than a half hour a day can leave your body in a state of bliss for the rest of the day. Endorphins get released into the body after every workout and you naturally become a happier more productive person overall. The phrase ‘No pain.. no gain’ is generally very true, however through this experience of aches and pains over the span of several workouts will also result in feelings of joy and a sense of well-being that lasts a long time. If someone tells you that exercise should be pleasurable and pain-free than that person has not worked-out hard enough nor challenged his or her body toward physical transformation. There are tremendous benefits to exercise that have been studied throughout the years and have been proven beneficial to your body over and over again. Exercise along with proper nutrition will help an individual prevent diabetes, heart disease, depression, anxiety, stress, and obesity. When we discipline our bodies we are also disciplining our minds: our thoughts, moods, and attitudes. Read more
Growing up with a father who was a two-time U.S. Olympian in Rowing (68′ Mexico City Olympic Bronze Medalist and 76′ Montreal Olympic Men’s Rowing Coach) was a very interesting experience. I thought it was normal routine workout and it made sense that my father would go out for a 3-hour workout and train 7 days a week. I didn’t really appreciate or even come close to understanding how truly hard and mentally tough it is to win an Olympic medal… let alone just to make the Olympic Team until I rowed and was recruited to row for UC Berkeley. All of a sudden I found myself the weakest and slowest rower on the team as we went on to win 3 National Championships and 4 PAC- 10 Championships in 4 years along with International rowers that were recruited from all over the world. It was my introduction to the next step of my rowing career as I rowed alongside recruited rowers from Sweden, Norway, Germany, England, Serbia, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and Croatia . I remember days where I would barely be awake during practice in the early mornings as I did not have enough time to recover in between practices. Our coaches made us do fitness tests every week to see how fast we could row 10,000 meters on the Concept 2 Rowing Machine. One year we accumulated 15 tests every week of 10,000 meters and about 10 fitness tests of 6,000 meters! My overall best Concept 2 times were 33 min 20 seconds for 10,000 meters (1:40 split avg) and a national team qualifying time of 19 min 2o seconds for the 6,000 meter test (1:36 split avg). Read more
Two years ago when I created Powerhouse Fitness in Long Beach it was my dream to offer a complete low impact high-calorie burn workout for everyone to enjoy no matter what experience an individual had in athletics. Recently I have had many new calls and emails regarding how ‘easy’ or ‘hard’ certain Powerhouse Fitness Classes were and what kinds of classes I thought would be best for people just starting out their new workout routine. Throughout my 20 years of experience as an athlete and rower I have found that nearly half of the general public I come in contact with and talk about my sport think that rowing is relatively ‘easy’ and discuss the perception that rowing is a total upper body workout. However, in reality, the power behind the rowing stroke is driven through your legs (about %80) and then the rest throughout the entire body. Rowing is actually one of the hardest, if not the hardest cardiovascular demanding sport that you can do on the planet. For instance, the standard Olympic distance for a rowing race is 2,000 meters (just over a mile). The standard U.S. Men’s Heavyweight Olympic Team time for rowing a 2,000 meter piece on the Concept 2 rowing machine is around 5 min :55 seconds (1:28 500 split avg or around 500 watts)! Out of all the Powerhouse Fitness Classes we have to offer such as Rowing, Bootcamp, Zumba, Evo Indoor Cycling, TRX Suspension Training, Pilates Arc Ab Exercises and the Ski Erg Training along with any other activity that you choose to do is as hard as you want to make it. es,Since you are the one that is participating in the activity it is also up to yourself to push as hard as you want. I always tell everyone in class at Powerhouse Fitness that if you can hold your body-weight in watts on the Concept 2 monitor then that is a great goal. Once you have hit your body-weight in watts you can then try and double your body-weight and so on. Read more

Even fitness buffs can have an off day. Here’s how to stay motivated, no matter what life throws at you.
There are many things that come up during the day that can distract you from your workout. You’re too tired, too hungry, too stressed, or just don’t have the time. Maybe you’re bored with your workout or progressing too slowly. Your favorite class is too overflowing with people or your favorite fitness machine is down for repairs. Your injured or sick in one way or another.
If you would have asked me 10 years ago that he was going to operate and own a fitness center in Long Beach I would have said ‘that’s crazy.. no way.’ I was always motivated through sports in one way or another and I loved the variety in which I could participate in most any sport. At one time in high school I was playing club soccer, Ice hockey, and rowing all in the same year. I had always dreamed about being paid to work out and compensated in one form or another. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a Communications major and minor in business hoping that I would write in a magazine or newspaper for a sports page. Funny how things turn out When I moved home from the U.S. National Rowing Team In 2005 I was ‘burned out’ of the same fitness routine I had been doing for the last 15 plus years in rowing. I started teaching indoor cycling classes in order to change my routine and get myself back to a fitness regiment in order to be honest with my workouts. I had always trained on my own but I found that when training with a group there was an amazing feeling of high energy and consistency while exercising. Not only does it keep you honest with your workout but the sense of the group workout adds an effective high energy fat burning workout you won’t find anywhere else!
